    Vilnius – a brief overview

Now established as a city-break destination of considerable repute, Lithuania’s attractive capital serves up an enjoyable blend of medieval architecture and modern thinking. It’s the site of Europe’s largest baroque Old Town, rightly recognised by UNESCO, but also plays home to a lively student population, a zinging nightlife and an ever-evolving spread of bars, cafés and restaurants.

The history of the city, meanwhile, is reflected in its visitor attractions, which range from a sturdy castle complex to former KGB cells. At times eccentric, Vilnius is a likeable city that rewards proper exploration – and holds more than a few surprises.

The Lithuanian capital is like a collage created from elements and images of every type and style. Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance church towers rise from the old-town ocean of magnificent, red-roofed buildings. Its opulent palaces recently provided the perfect setting for the BBC’s filming of an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace.

Some 50 000 Jews lived in these narrow streets before World War II, earning the city the by-name “Jerusalem of the North.” The Socialist-Realist sculptures of farm laborers and workers which today line Green Bridge over the River Neris are a legacy from the Soviet era. With its many historical buildings, Vilnius is quintessentially European, and as a World Cultural Heritage Site enjoys UNESCO protection.

The Old Town is full of all sorts of shops, from run-of-the-mill souvenir outlets to quality vendors of amber, handicrafts, traditional clothing and more. Parts of the city’s broad major thoroughfare, Gediminas Avenue, also have strong shopping potential, particularly if you’re after high-end goods.

Elsewhere in town, the Halės Market (Pylimo gatvė, halesturgaviete.lt) is a sizeable option close to the railway station – the building is more than a century old.
